Soviet Greatsword

Rendered in Arnold. Modeled in Maya.

I was inspired to render the blade that G.R.R. Martin described in AGoT:

"...a longsword like none that Will had ever seen. No human metal had gone into the forging of that blade. I was alive with moonlight, translucent, a chard of chrystal so thin that it seemed almost to vanish when seen edge on. There was a faint blue shimmer to the thing, a ghost-light that played around its edges, and somehow Will knew that it was sharper than any razor."

Once the blade was complete I needed a hilt, designed like something I've never seen before, and so I came up with this. Rosewood and blue ash wood for the two handed grips, a jewel on each side of a shiny ceramic wrap, and a periwinkle gem for the pommel, all layed into unpolished bronze.

The goal was to learn Arnold render, and to put it into skyrim via mods.

I tried to keep the poly count low. Final tally was 60,272 faces.

Diffuse and bump, with closeups. Specular input was the same as diffuse.

textures 1

The blade was divided into three parts: edge, sidde, and middle, each had its own shader, that differed slightly from one another in bump intensity (or absence) and emmisiion values.

topology 3

While playing with very high specular values, I ran into artifacts, i.e. "fireflies" (seen as the sparkles in the image below, right side of the blade). Very luckily they looked great! So I kept them in.

That's it! Thank you for viewing.
